Pelvic Anatomy

Understanding the Pelvic Floor

The pelvic floor is a group of muscles and connective tissues that span the bottom of the pelvis. These muscles support the pelvic organs, including the bladder, uterus (in women), and rectum, helping to maintain their proper position and function. The pelvic floor also plays a crucial role in urinary and bowel control, sexual function, and core stability. Proper functioning of the pelvic floor muscles is essential for overall pelvic health and can impact various aspects of daily life, including continence, sexual health, and physical activity.

The 5 Main Roles of the Pelvic Floor:

Support: Supports the bladder, uterus, rectum, and abdominal organs against gravity and downward pressure.

Stability: Maintains body stability through coordinated activity between the upper and lower body.

Sphincteric Function: Regulates the flow of urine and stool by controlling both constriction and relaxation.

Sexual Function: Facilitates healthy sexual functioning.

Circulation: Assists in blood and lymphatic circulation within the pelvis.
